A Message From Rodney...
Hello and welcome. I hope 2015 finds you healthy, happy and ready to fly the 10th Cessnas 2 Oshkosh Mass Arrival, which is just a few months away. Craig, Gil, and I are very excited about our 10th arrival coming up in July. Ten years ago I could not have imagined that we would still be here with such a large group of returning participants. It has truly been an honor for the three of us to coordinate Cessnas 2 Oshkosh for you every year! We are eagerly anticipating and putting together this year's event to pay tribute to your continued participation.

Personally, I have been blown away by the rapid drop in fuel prices in the last couple of months. Hopefully, this will enable people to find it more affordable to join us in Oshkosh for our 10th and best arrival yet. We need each and every one of you do everything you can to recruit new participants and bring back those pilots who have missed an arrival or two. A wonderful case study in successful recruitment is what our friend Jerry Olson has done with his merry band of Cardinal brothers. His hard work and follow thru made the Cardinal the best represented model last year. Let's see if we can all do that. Read The Cardinal Invasion story to see how it was done.

We are looking for our 10th anniversary to be our biggest year so far, with this comes a lot of hard work. Being the control freaks that we are, it has been hard for Craig, Gil and myself to let go of certain functions of Cessnas to Oshkosh. Steve Wolf, Jerry Olson, Steve Holmes, Bob Ahern, Sarah Rovner, Ken and Sara McClean and numerous other people (please forgive my feeble mind) have stepped forward to help out and for that, we extend our thanks. This year will be bigger still and we will need even more help. In one of the upcoming newsletter, we will be asking for volunteers to take over some aspects of the event. As the saying goes: "Many hands make light work". Please take a look at the list and see where you might be able to apply your particular skills and let us know.

To Fly Our Arrival...
...a pilot must register and pay the registration fee, participate in at least one formation flight training clinic in 2015 and attend the mass arrival preflight brief on July 18th. The preflight brief is held in the main hangar of Wisconsin Aviation at Dodge County Airport (KUNU) in Juneau, Wisconsin and starts promptly at 11:00 am CDT (UTC-5).

The registration process is simple: You visit our website, click on the Registration tab (the first from the right at the top of every page), fill in some information about yourself and your passengers and answer a few questions. Pilots who have registered to fly the mass arrival in the past, whether they flew the arrival or not, can save some time by retrieving their personal information from our database. To do so, look for the appropriate link on our registration page and click on it, log in using the same email address and zip code that you used in the most recent registration, check the prefilled form, make any necessary corrections and submit the updated form.

The final step in the registration process is paying the registration fee. The fee covers the cost of the polo shirt embroidered with our logo, the Friday dinner and the Saturday lunch in Juneau, and the BBQ dinner at Cessna Base Camp. Our registration fee in 2015 is is again $60.00 for registrations completed by the deadline of June 4, 2015 at Midnight CDT, and the late registration fee remained $75.00. Children, up to 12 years of age, will not incur a fee. We use Paypal® to process the registration fee payment. You are not required to have a Paypal® account. The process is simple and intuitive. You can pay using your Paypal® account, if you have one, or any major credit card. We will consider alternative forms of payment on an individual basis.

The Cardinal Invasion
by Jerry Olson

2014 was a special year for Cardinals participating in the Cessnas 2 Oshkosh mass arrival. Each year there have been 40 to 60 Cessnas of various ages and types joining the mass arrival. In 2014 there were 54, only this year a third of them, 18, were Cardinals.

This Cardinal Invasion began five years ago when two Cardinals joined C2O. After experiencing the challenge and camaraderie with C2O, and considering the closeness of the Cardinal community, it was just natural to insure other Cardinal owners heard about the great event they were missing. This transformed into an annual mission; posting descriptions, photos, videos and announcements in Cardinal Flyers Online (CFO), the Cardinal type club.

Then following up with emails and contacts to Cardinal owners encouraging them to join and reminding them of the formation flight training clinics. And then, lots of personal one-on-one conversations and talking-up the Cessnas 2 Oshkosh mass arrival at other Cardinal events. This developed into a strong core group of Cardinal owners, who by 2014 were helping to organize and host C2O formation flight training clinics in Virginia, Texas and Washington State.

In June, EAA News editor Ric Reynolds heard about this Cardinal influx and published a short story in the EAA News about C2O, the mass arrival and the Cardinals. This story was noticed by well-known aviation photo journalist David Leininger. David normally shoots photos and writes articles about warbirds, but this Cardinal influx tweaked his curiosity. So he contacted C2O asking if we may be interested in doing a photo shoot of Cardinals for a magazine article. David's inquiry was forwarded to me, who willingly volunteered (i.e. jumped at the chance) to work with David to put it together.

This was just too good an opportunity to advance C2O and have some fun as well. The coordination was actually fairly simple, the hardest part being how to select the Cardinals and pilots for the photo shoot. There were just so many great looking Cardinals and great pilots as candidates. Considering we would be flying much closer together in formation than we normally do in the C2O clinics, the selection came down to the most experienced formation pilots. We selected seven (7) Cardinals, six (6) for the photo shoot, and one as a backup, in case one couldn't make it to Dodge County Airport in time. Read more...
