The Pirep
Thank You ! Pirep No. 3 - June 2009
We would like to express our appreciation for the enthusiastic response to the 2009 pilot recruitment drive for the 2009 Cessnas 2 Oshkosh Mass Arrival into EAA AirVenture - Oshkosh. We are anxiously awaiting our appointed date and time of July 25th at 2:30 PM CDT. As can be seen in our Progress Report, to date, forty-three (43) aircraft and pilots plus ninety-four (94) passengers, companions, relatives and friends are registered to participate in our arrival. This is an amazing feat, considering the times we're living and the pessimistic forecasts around us. Needless to say, it has been a tremendous and very rewarding effort on the part of the organizers and collaborators of Cessnas 2 Oshkosh. We appreciate the trust placed in us by those pilots who have registered so far and those who will register in the coming weeks. We will not disappoint you. We have put together a great celebration, but we need your help to make all these plans a reality.

First, we ask that each one of you register in a clinic and train for the arrival. The safety of each pilot flying the arrival, and that of his passengers, depends on the ability of each pilot to fly a stable arrival and make a safe landing. This, as many other aspects of aviation, depends on training and practice. The comfort level of each pilot depends in great part on the trust that each pilot has in the pilot flying his wing. Let's get out of our winter hideouts and let's go flying.
Register in a clinic.

Second, we ask that you pay your registration fee. To those who have paid, thank you. As it has been explained on our website and in previous newsletter issues, the registration fee covers the cost of a logo shirt that each pilot and registered passenger will receive in Juneau on June 25th, the cost of the dinner celebration on July 26th and other miscellaneous expenses. For details about the process to pay the registration fee, see the section at the bottom of this newsletter or visit our website. Pay registration here...

Third, we ask that you become a spokesperson for this event. "When the going gets tough, the tough get going" is the saying that applies here. There is no question that these are tough times. Some may even say that we are crazy to be putting together an event like this in times like these. We need to counter this view. The alternative, to do nothing, is unacceptable. We need to spread the word about this event. Each one of you can help make this event a great success by recruiting your friends and fellow pilots. Have a presence at your local airport, go to flying club meetings, start hangar talks about the event and refer those questions that you're not able to answer to us. We will be more than happy to answer any question. For those of you who prefer the online forum media, log in and post about our event.

Lastly, we ask of those of you who are in a position to contribute financial resources to contact us and do so. Last year's event was very successful due, in no small part, to the generous contribution of donors who gave beyond what was asked. Those contributions were used to offset the cost of our website, producing this newsletter, the storage facility to keep our camping equipment and the rental of a van used to carry many of you to and from Oshkosh for dinner outings and to do our daily grocery, ice and beer runs.

We are way on our way to another successful Cessnas 2 Oshkosh Mass Arrival. Thanks to each one of you for helping us carry the torch!
The Pirep is the official newsletter of Cessnas 2 Oshkosh. It is a vehicle to keep all the participants in the Cessnas 2 Oshkosh 2009 Mass Arrival and our friends informed about the progress on our way to Oshkosh. In 2009, it will be published on the fifteenth of each month. Additional issues will be published if the need arises.
Progress Report

To date, there are forty-three (43) aircraft registered to fly the mass arrival. Nineteen (19) states and two (2) Canadian provinces are represented. California leads with thirteen (13) aircraft. Michigan and Washington come in second with three (3) aircraft each. Colorado, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio and Texas come in third with two (2) aircraft each. Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, Pennsylvanya, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, Alberta and Manitoba trail with one (1) aircraft each.

The Skylane (C182) leads the models with fifteen (15) aircraft, followed in second by the Skyhawk (C172) with eleven (11), in third the Centurion (C210) with seven (7) aircraft, in fourth is the Skywagon (C180/185) with six (6) aircraft and trailing in fifth are the Stationair (C205/206/207) and the C310 with two (2) each.

These results so far, continue to please us considering the current economic situation. We encourage those debating whether or not to go to Oshkosh this year, to make your plans now. It is going to be a good year. Other airshows and aviation events have beat the pessimistic forecasts. Come celebrate with your family, relatives and friends!
Scheduled Formation Clinics
Sign up for any of these clinics.
We encourage all our pilots to plan ahead and participate in one of the clinics prior to the July 24th clinic in Juneau. We anticipate a busy Juneau clinic and, as many of you know from experience, the summer weather in Wisconsin is unpredictable.

If the Juneau Clinic is your only option, by all means come to Juneau. Every pilot present in the Juneau clinic will train and have the opportunity to qualify for the mass arrival.

Self-Proficiency Formation Training Tip
Next time you go flying, practice this exercise. After lift-off, accelerate to 90 knots in a C-172, 110 in a C-182 and 130 in a C-205/206/207/210 and maintain this speed throughout the exercise. Make smooth attitude and power adjustments to climb at a rate of 500 fpm or less. Maintaining airspeed is primary, rate of climb is secondary. Climb to a cruise altitude of 2,000 AGL and retrim to maintain airspeed and cruise altitude. Practice standard and half-standard rate turns and descents at 500 fpm maintaining your target speed at all times. Take notice of the power settings required for the different phases of your flight.
